Playing It Cool

Blurb:

Addison has had her future mapped out since she was a little girl – pre-law degree from the University of Nebraska, getting into a top notch law school, followed by a career as a no-nonsense lawyer.  She knows that a husband will come at some point, but she hasn’t figured that part out yet.  One thing is certain, it’s not Bryce Portwood, the annoying class clown in her English class.

Bryce has never taken anything too serious.  Life’s too short to get all worked up and never have fun.  The moment Addison Webster opened her mouth, he knew she needed to let her hair down, and he wanted to be the one to help her.  Getting Addison to hang out was easy. Getting her to lighten up and trust him, not so much.

Bryce has a plan.  If he can get her to let go and have fun, maybe she’ll see he’s not so bad.  If Bryce can just play it cool, maybe he can prove to her that he can fit into those well-laid plans after all.

Excerpt:
“So, Bryce, no last name.  What’s your major?”
“Portwood.”
“I’ve never heard of that?  What’s it good for?”
“No, my last name is Portwood.  I don’t have a major.”

The blush bloomed in her cheeks again.  “Oh, do you have any idea what you want to do?”
“Probably something in computers, Professor Umbridge.”
Addison’s eyes popped open, and she tried to say something and then closed her mouth.  Finally, she said, “I don’t know why you’d say that, but whatever.”
“Don’t get so worked up.  It’s just that I’m pretty sure after spending what little time we have together that you don’t really know how to have fun.  That’s no one’s fault.  You’ve just never learned.”

“And I suppose you think you can teach me?”
“Well, I am pretty decent at causing trouble.”
“Why am I not surprised?”
“It’s a gift.  A gift I’ve been blessed with.”
“What makes you think I can’t get into trouble?  I’ve gotten into plenty of trouble.”
“Oh yeah,” he said raising an eyebrow.  “Like what?  Blow me away.”
“Well, I…I…” she trailed off.

“It’s okay,” he told her as he patted her shoulder.  “We can’t all be awesome.”
“I can do stuff too.”
“Oh, please, don’t do it on my account,” he said, but secretly he was hoping she would.  He would love to see little Addison bust loose.
“I’ll prove it to you, make you a bet.  When I win, you can’t make fun of me anymore, and you’ll owe me something.  I don’t know yet what it’d be, but I’ll think about it and come up with my terms before we start.”

“And when I win?” he asked.
“I don’t care what it is because you aren’t winning.”
Challenge accepted.
